The great culture of Netflix company

Become what you want in past

Some days ago, I was talking with a friend who told me he had some problems in his mind. He got divorced recently, but he was stuck in the past. Remembering and recalling his memories.

In that moment I thought in a metaphore to help him. Then I told him something I think fortunately worked in his mind:
«Imagine you buy a flower. For a while you like it, so you watering it everyday, you look at it, admire it. As the time pass, the flower grows, colorful, lush, healthy. Amazing, beautiful.

The ability we have to pay or not attention to something and to make it grow or not is powerful. But this is a common place. Everybody knows this, I think. You can guess too what happen to the flower if you forget it, just because you bought, for instance, a little sweet fish. Now, every day you only watch the fish, feed him, take care of aquarium, plants, stones and so one. The fish is now happy, shining, healthy.
Well, seems the flower withered. What a obvious conclusion… To say what? …

To remember you about the power we have to make the present into past. In a short time, and because of a lack of attention, the flower became a piece of past, withered. Obviously, if you don’t pay attention to something, something dies. But, at the same time, something can shine around if you want, if you are interested in. It’s simple, not easy. But it’s simple.

A real bad experience, something we would like to erase from our mind but unfortunately we keep going to give it power… Use your power to make all present painful pieces of your life in past. Please find a "fish", moving away from what you don’t want.»

Well, when my friend left me it seemed much happier than before. Maybe he now trys to find his «fish» as a start to reach a little of well being.

Make whatever you want in past, as soon as you can. Even if it takes time. It worth it

Philosophy of success - Do you believe?

If you think you are a loser,
You will be defeated.
If you do not think "want at any cost,"
Will not achieve anything.
Even if you want to win, but if you think you will not succeed,
The victory did not smile for you.

If you do things by half
You will be a failure.
We discovered this world
That success begins with our intention
And everything is determined by our mind.

If you think it is an unfortunate,
You will be.
If you aim to achieve a higher position
Must first obtain the victory,
Equip yourself with the belief that you can
Infallibly.

The struggle for life is not always advantageous;
Neither the strong nor to clever.
Sooner or later,
Who catches the victory is one that believes in full:
I get it.

The strange labor world is killing slowly

Labor market is quite strange in these days of crisis. People don’t know what to do to get a job. What is best? What is the best strategy to make an approach? What to highlight? Skills? Experience? Age? Academic degree? Genre? Anyway, it seems to be difficult to make a decision of what to emphasize.

Pauline Laumans is director at http://www.c-t-u.com/, holistic life coach, consultant and trainer coach at Libertas in Vivo Inc., and explains very well this reality. She has experience in countries like USA, Canada and Netherlands and has given me permission to reproduce a block of her remarkable text of the strange labor world. Feel free to have a look at her site www.c-t-u.com to read all the text, titled Applying for a job – Breaking down the knowledge and motivation society

«(…) managers and staff do not know anymore what to do. It is even described in the comic book of “Spike and Suzy” in the “Sounds Tapper” by Willy Vander teen. In the comic there is a conversation between Mr. Jones and Mr. Just about a possible available position. “Mr. Jones, do you have a position available for my son? Well there is a vacancy… no knowledge required salary 12,000 per month. Oh, but that’s too much Mr. Jones. Well then… um… there’s another job… really a job for a friend… there are no requirements… he can just start salary 10,000 per month. Mr. Jones, but that’s still too much. I want my son to start from the bottom. Oh well then he starts at the youngest entrant and begins with a salary of 1,500 per month, but then they he needs to have the right skills, experience and evidence and have to pass the exam.”

To perform a simple job a person needs to have a specific training and experience already, but where the novice person needs to obtain it becomes impossible. Someone with the right experience and diplomas becomes neglected.

A person with the diplomas and experience is called overqualified, too old, too young, missing the x factor, wrong sexe or wrong social background (positive discrimination?) not fitting in the team etc.

For example, someone for a secretary job must well accomplish in Marketing and IT, but get paid for a simple secretarial job.

You may also be too young because someone recently applied for a job at 65 agency and was rejected or you are too old when you have more than 10 years of experience.

If you obtain a job for a few hours they require that you have a car. How to pay a car with only a couple of hours work?»

It worth reading all text and have a look to Pauline’s blog http://www.c-t-u.com/blog/

Performance and Appraisals must be a positive experience

Some weeks ago, Dan Rockwell, who I’m following in twitter, published a text in his blog leadershipfreak that put me thinking in my country, Portugal. He wrote: «For a lot of people, performance appraisals are a negative experience, because we are being judged by another (…)» Unfortunately, in Portugal, appraisals are almost ever bad experiences, because it usualy hurts the good performers.

But let read the wise words of Dan about performance and appraisals: «(…) But you could change the whole experience and improve its business value simply by changing the focus. The goal should be to encourage and inspire people to be their best, rather than to critique, rate and rank them. Here are some ways you can do that:
Encourage Self-Awareness - In order to change, we need to know ourselves and our deep motivations. By making performance journaling and self-assessments a part of your performance appraisal process, you encourage employees to deepen their self-knowledge, and support growth and change.
Foster Personal Development - Development plans should focus on enhancing an employee’s experience and expertise – preparing them for career advancement, not just addressing “performance gaps”.
Keep Records of Successes - Invite employees to reflect on why they excelled in a particular area. What were the «conditions» that supported their success? Consciously understanding what we need to be our best helps us to «recreate» those conditions, supporting our success.
Take the Focus Off the Ratings - If we want performance appraisals to be a positive experience, we need to focus on self-awareness and growth, not the ratings. Invite the employee to identify: What successes they had - What contributed to their success - Skills/areas they would like to further develop - Things they need to support their performance and success (…)»

Delicious advices. Here is now a traditional portuguese story: One of these days a service TV technician came to my small company to install the cable. Before start working, we both had a coffee and talked a while. He told me everything about installing a cable TV, and seems the guy liked his work very much. But then he confessed me his sadness about appraisals. He and two more colleagues had several recommendations from happy costumers. But the department decided to move them out for different areas, because the rest of the team, 69 technicians, have never had recommendations from costumers and that situation could create some conflicts.

Amazing, don’t you think? So, instead of pushing the 69 technicians to a next level of excellence, managers preferred to keep the good performers away in three different areas. Instead of showing how to perform better, managers hidden the better work process and taught everybody that low average is more acceptable.

The conclusion: High performance may be disappointing for high performers. Guess what may happen?

Doing what you are not doing and not doing what you are doing

If you do not like what you are doing, you have to make a choice and start doing what you are not doing
Something you would like to do but you haven’t had enough courage to start the path straight ahead.
If you don’t like what you are doing, what means you don’t like your present, then make it in the past as soon as you can. Start a new life or, at least, start designing in your head your life project. What you want and you don’t want, in terms of behaviors, attitudes, skills, training, friends, places, books... Take some risks. As T. Harv Eker says, «risk has everything to do with confidence». It’s impossible to live the whole life in a safe place, in this case an organization. So, start thinking today.

If you don’t like your present, certainly you are not happy. Probably you aren't feeling passion for what you are doing now. What can you achieve in a situation like this? Ok, you get your salary, important to pay the bills. Can you earn more? Have you any chance of new challenges in your labor life?

I’ve never known anyone unhappy in its work that had achieved something great. Actually, great things comes from passion, challenges and opportunities.
Jim Rohn used to say we don’t have to work on the economy, we have only to work on ourselves to make ourselves valuable to the market. With multiple skills. We get paid from bringing value to the marketplace. The value we bring and the value we become (entrepreneur, leader, etc.). Go to work on yourselves. «Success is something you attract by becoming an attractive person. Success is not something you pursue.»
