The great singer Sérgio Godinho is (part II)

Here’s my promise. One of the most popular Sérgio Godinho songs, «Liberdade», which means «Freedom». This song illustrates the moment Portugal saw the regime change, in 1974.

So, the first sentence of the lyric is «We came with the burden of the past and seed». Our seed is 800 years of history, and our past is 48 years of despotic regime (before 1974). After that, we needed so much to evolve. The song talks about our basic needs for a start (Peace, Bread (food), Housing, Health and Education), and some problems those needs cause, especially when we reborn from the darkness. Sérgio Godinho borned in 1945, in Oporto, Portugal. He left the country when he was only 20 years old, to «flee» from colonial war in Africa (Angola and Mozambique). He lived 9 years in Paris and made part of «Hair» musical. His first LP, named «Os Sobreviventes» («The Survivors»), was recorded in France, in 1971, with french musicians and some Portuguese people living in France at the time. He recorded too the LP «Pré-Histórias» (Pre Histories). These two discs were prohibited in Portugal by censorship. Only in 1974 we could enjoy the music on these discs.
